You can't teach a heart where home is.

Patriotism exists in most of us. Some display it more prominently, while others only possess it during times of crisis like war. I think patriotism exists because of our emotional attachments to things that matter to us: family, friends and the society that brought us up. It's not just about defending the country during wartime, but the desire to stay here and contribute to the national community.

It's disheartening to learn of people who will almost run away at the first chance when the country needs them. Though not exactly treason, i believe that every citizen has a moral obligation to fulfill to the state, especially in protecting our country. In Singapore, the state provides for every citizen adequately. We get really cheap subsidized high-quality education till we take education for granted. Everyone has opportunities to succeed. it is only right that we return the favour to the nation when the need arises. For boys, it comes in the form of national service. two years is not a sacrifice or burden if you view it from a positive angle. I know some people will think that i am just crapping some blind useless nationalism stuff, but i also know some people who will agree on my stand.

Being a global citizen doesn't mean that we need to sacrifice our patriotism. When the call of duty sounds, at least i know that some will join me in protecting the state and the people who matter in our lives.

Our obligations to our country never cease but with our lives.
John Adams (1735-1826)
